Butler County

Butler County Butler County, located in the south-central part of the state, was the commonwealth’s 53rd county. Settlers moving into the area thought they had found “a little bit of heaven”–a virgin forest of oak, poplar, chestnut, hickory, and walnut and an abundance of wild game. Out of this wilderness developed a county rich in tradition, with many contributions to state and national history. It has been said that, for its population, the county has produced more notable people than any other in the nation. This list including two governors, an attorney general of Kentucky, a chief justice of the Kentucky Supreme Court, a US senator, three US representatives, a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, two US Navy admirals, a Methodist bishop, and countless other equally productive citizens who proudly call Butler County home.

Remembering Mississippi’s Confederates, Mississippi, Images of America, Paperbac

Remembering Mississippi’s Confederates, Mississippi, Images of America, Paperbac Remembering Mississippi’s Confederates is a collection of never-before-seen images which document the history of these soldiers. The Confederate States of America engaged in a battle for national survival that lasted four long and incredibly bloody years. The conflict went on for so long because thousands of rebels were willing to lay down their lives and defend their homes to the last man and last cartridge. Many of these soldiers were Mississippians–approximately 78,000 citizens of the Magnolia State can be documented as having served in the Civil War. Of this number, over 27,500 died either of disease or in combat. Remembering Mississippi’s Confederates is a photographic tribute to the men who fought so gallantly for their state. Many of the images in this volume have never been published and come from the proud descendants of the soldiers themselves; others were acquired from collections spread across the United States.

In 1927, Route 1 became all concrete between Washington, DC, and Richmond. Business flourished until the interstate highway system came into being in the 1950s. There is much history surrounding US 1, often called America’s Main Street.

US Forest Service Ranger Stations of the West, Oregon, Images of America, Paperb Pioneer US Forest Service rangers and their ranger stations are classic symbols of the American West. The early rangers are no longer around. But some of the stations from which they protected the West’s national forests to secure “the greatest good for the greatest number in the long run,” as decreed by the first chief of the US Forest Service, Gifford Pinchot, remain to tell their stories and inspire their successors.

Hinsdale

Hinsdale Through the 200-plus photographs and informative captions, this visual history by local author Sandra Bennett Williams seeks to remind residents of Hinsdale’s charming past.In 1858, the town of Fullersburg, centered at what is now York Road and Ogden Avenue, petitioned the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad to develop a western route that would pass through their community. The track was eventually built, but finding the topography at Fullersburg unsuitable, the route curved one mile to the south through vacant prairie. Enterprising entrepreneur William Robbins seized this opportunity, purchasing land along the new route and creating a community: Hinsdale. Designed to be a commuter suburb, Hinsdale’s clean air, safe streets, and large lots have made it the perfect choice for Chicago business leaders since its beginning. It remains without industry, reflecting the comfortable well-being of its residents.

Southern California Surf Music, 1960-1966, California, Images of America, Paperb

Southern California Surf Music, 1960-1966, California, Images of America, Paperb Dick Dale & the Del-Tones began holding weekend dances at the Rendezvous Ballroom in Balboa, California, in the summer of 1960. Over the next year and a half, Dale developed the sound and style that came to be known as “surf music.” The result was the development of more powerful guitar amplifiers, a dramatic increase in the sales of Fender guitars and amplifiers, and a shift from New York to West Coast recording studios. More and more people were drawn to the sport of surfing, which became an important part of teen beach culture at the time. Even landlocked teenagers were captured by the moment, carrying surfboards atop their woodies in Phoenix or bleaching their hair blonde in St. Paul. For hundreds of thousands of kids, though, the attraction was not the connection to surfing; it was the connection to the music pioneered by Dick Dale.

Legendary Locals of Cheboygan, Michigan, Legendary Locals, Paperback

Legendary Locals of Cheboygan, Michigan, Legendary Locals, Paperback Founded as a lumbering town in the mid-1800s, Cheboygan has transformed over the years to be something much less simplistic and much more dynamic; so, too, have its people. While some of Cheboygan’s residents played important roles in business or commerce, others made their mark through philanthropic work, service to the community, or just by their demeanor. History is as much about people as it is about events–people like Gordon “Scoop” Turner, who came to Cheboygan for a few months but ended up staying for a lifetime. There are businessmen like Millard D. Olds, who became one of the most successful lumbermen at a time when others were leaving town, and George M. Humphrey, the 55th treasurer of the United States. An eye towards the community has also made some residents legendary, such as Joyce and Quincy Leslie. And, of course, there are those whose history is shrouded in controversy, including Sheriff Fred Ming, under whose authority a Native American village was burned to the ground. Whatever their story, these locals have contributed to the character and history of Cheboygan.

Baseball in Washington, D.C., District of Columbia, Images of America, Paperback

Baseball in Washington, D.C., District of Columbia, Images of America, Paperback Dubbed “”America’s Game”” by Walt Whitman, baseball has been enjoyed in our nation’s capital by young boys playing street stickball and Presidents throwing each season’s inaugural pitch.Just 13 years after Alexander Cartwright codified baseball’s rules, the Washington Nationals Baseball Club formed and in 1867 toured the country spreading the “”baseball gospel.”” By 1901 the team became one of the first eight major league teams in the newly formed American League. Players such as Walter Johnson, probably the greatest pitcher of all time, and other Senators under the stewardship of owner Clark Griffith successfully led the club in 1924 to what many consider to be the most exciting World Series in baseball history.Later, the Homestead Grays played at Griffith Stadium and fielded a team featuring legendary Negro League greats such as Josh Gibson and Buck Leonard. The powerhouse Grays, during a ten-year span, won nine Negro League World Championships, a record that may never be equaled in any team sport again. When the Grays disbanded, the original Senators left for Minnesota in 1960, and the expansion Senators of the 1960s relocated, the city was left without a professional baseball team. While many feared that baseball in D.C. was over, a spirit remained on the diamond and is still felt today as children and adults team up in one way or another to play the national pastime in the nation’s capital. Hopes for a new professional team linger, and those remembering baseball’s heyday will enjoy this extensive and unusual collection of historic photos that celebrate a time when the crowds roared and Washingtonians believed that the summer game would never end.

Northern Virginia’s Equestrian Heritage, Virginia, Images of America, Paperback

Northern Virginia’s Equestrian Heritage, Virginia, Images of America, Paperback For over 200 years, Northern Virginia has enjoyed a respected reputation for its equestrian heritage. The present-day home of horse museums and libraries, as well as breeding, sports, and shows of all sort, Northern Virginia truly is “hunt country.” Northern Virginia’s Equestrian Heritage showcases the area’s early hunting history and offers a singular glimpse into the past glory days of fox hunts, hound-breeding, horse races, and horse shows. Beautiful estates where men and women gathered, partied, and hunted once dotted the landscape; today, however, many of these estates remain only in photographs and memories. The area’s picturesque countryside has enticed well-known families, including the Kennedys and the DuPont Scotts, to join in the local favored pastime. Some of the world’s best fox hunting took place in Loudoun County before the Civil War; afterwards, the hounds were let loose and very few quality packs remained. It took the combined help of fox hunters and land barons to reinstate the breeding of prestigious hounds and increase the sport’s popularity once again. Upperville, the home of America’s oldest horse show, dates to 1853 and has given shape to horse shows all over the country. Even women’s place in equestrian history was rallied for in Northern Virginia; Viola Townsend Winmill, who became one of the “first ladies” of fox hunting, and her husband Robert C. Winmill lived in Warrenton for more than 50 years and played polo, raced horses, raised hounds, and collected coaches.

Along the Kirkwood Highway, Delaware, Images of America, Paperback

Along the Kirkwood Highway, Delaware, Images of America, Paperback The Kirkwood Highway is an almost six-mile portion of State Route 2 in New Castle County, Delaware. Built as a bypass of Marshallton after the opening of Delaware Park at Stanton in 1937, it was meant to provide Wilmington-area horse-racing fans a straighter and faster route to the track. It is named after a distinguished officer of the American Revolution, Robert Kirkwood Jr., who was born at his family’s farm along Polly Drummond Hill Road in Newark in 1756. Miami and Erie Canal, Ohio, Images of America, Paperback

Miami and Erie Canal, Ohio, Images of America, Paperback Travel through the history of Ohio’s historic canals and follow its growth throughout the years told with hundreds of photographs. In the 1800s, the United States was a nation obsessed with finding a form of transportation that was the fastest, cheapest, and most reliable; at the time, canals were the answer. They took passengers and goods off of dusty or muddy roads and delivered them to their destinations faster and cheaper than by any other means. From Toledo to Cincinnati, the Miami and Erie Canal provided western Ohio with that sorely needed waterway and became part of the 1,000 miles of Ohio canals contributing to the national network of canals. Mineral Wells, Texas, Images of America, Paperback

Mineral Wells, Texas, Images of America, Paperback The family of James Alvis Lynch headed west from Denison, Texas, to find a dry climate that would alleviate Lynch’s symptoms of malaria and his wife Amanda’s rheumatism. They traveled as far as the Brazos River, where U.S. 180 crosses today, when one of their oxen drowned, and the other was struck by lightning. To make matters worse, the Lynches learned of hair-raising tales of the struggles between Comanches and settlers. So on Christmas Eve in 1877, the Lynch family decided to settle 4 miles east of the Brazos in the beautiful valley between what are the East and West Mountains in present-day Mineral Wells. There, the Lynch family discovered the mineral-rich water that mended their maladies and brought tourists from far and wide to take the healing cure. The geology of the area also brought oil, gas, and brick plants, while the attacks on local settlers brought a military presence to the region. The history of Mineral Wells is alive today, as many descendants of early pioneers still live and work in the community, full of pride for their families’ contributions to the area.

Legendary Locals of Pacifica, California, Legendary Locals, Paperback

Legendary Locals of Pacifica, California, Legendary Locals, Paperback Pacifica has the nickname “Scenic Pacifica” because of its beautiful ocean vistas and lovely hillside views. A haven for young families, Pacifica fostered strong leaders among housewives, environmental activists, and businesspeople. The schools, service clubs, and athletic fields produced local celebrities, but the proximity to San Francisco helped forge more widely known legends. This combination of personalities helped make it possible to identify a broad spectrum of legendary locals, from a woman who was the first mayor of Pacifica to a successful comedian who earned national attention on Saturday Night Live and in the movies.

Baytown

Baytown The early history of Baytown is intertwined with the early history of Texas. The first president of the Republic of Texas, David G. Burnet, and two-time president Sam Houston both lived in the neighborhood. Dr. Ashbel Smith, Texas ambassador to France and England, first president of the University of Texas in Austin, and a founder of the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, called Goose Creek home. After the last president of Texas, Anson Jones, committed suicide, his widow, Mary Jones, moved here with their children. She later helped form the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and served as its first president. The major industry in the 1800s was brick making, and over a 100-year period, up to 12 million bricks a year were made on Cedar Bayou and shipped to Galveston, where many buildings built with these bricks still stand. In 1908, the industry became oil with the discovery of the Goose Creek oil field, which, for a while, was the largest producing field in Texas. Because of the proximity to the oil field and access to shipping, the huge Humble Oil Refinery was built at Baytown, starting up in 1919.

Conway, South Carolina, Images of America, Paperback

Conway, South Carolina, Images of America, Paperback Conway was established in 1732 as Kingston, the principal seat of Kingston Township, but was renamed in honor of local politician Robert Conway, who distinguished himself in war service under the heroic “Swamp Fox,” Francis Marion, following the American Revolution. Situated where Kingston Lake joins the Waccamaw River, Conway was originally isolated by wetlands and developed slowly, primarily supported by subsistence farmers in surrounding Horry County. Lacking the tidal rivers of remaining coastal South Carolina, area residents harvested turpentine and timber, improved transportation via steamboats and trains, and cultivated tobacco and tourism as the 20th century spawned nearby Myrtle Beach. Today, Conway reveres its 1825 Robert Mills Courthouse anchoring a picturesque downtown highlighted by moss-draped live oaks and a Main Street bridge beckoning visitors to frequent festivals, live theatre, and a scenic river walk.

Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlour, Oregon, Images of America, Paperback

Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlour, Oregon, Images of America, Paperback Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlours was an iconic restaurant chain that originated in Portland, Oregon. Originally opened by Bob Farrell and Ken McCarthy in 1963, the family-friendly chain would become known for classic ice cream sundaes and birthday party celebrations. The restaurants were designed using a turn-of-the-20th-century theme with a marble-topped soda fountain, Tiffany lamps, and waiters dressed in colorful vests and skimmer hats. While continuing to open new stores in Portland, Farrell and McCarthy developed a franchise program to expand Farrell’s into other cities in Oregon, Washington, and Northern California. Patrick J. Baker worked at Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlours in Greendale, Wisconsin, from 1981 to 1985 and later became an investor in Farrell’s when the chain was revived from 2003 to 2019. Taken from numerous personal interviews and correspondence with Bob Farrell and Ken McCarthy, Baker shares the history of the chain up to the 1972 sale to the Marriott Corporation. This book uses photographs from the author’s extensive collection of images of the Farrell’s in Oregon, which were commissioned by Farrell and McCarthy in the 1960s.

Danville features graceful houses of worship along Millionaires Row and other architecturally significant landmarks. Danville Revisited showcases the rich industrial and manufacturing history of this southern Virginia city.

Route 66 St. Louis Style, Missouri, Images of America, Paperback

Route 66 St. Louis Style, Missouri, Images of America, Paperback For Route 66 to become the most famous highway in history, it had to pass through the “Gateway to the West.” St. Louis is the largest city between Chicago and Los Angeles, and “St. Louee” comes first on the list of those that Nat King Cole and many other artists sang out on “(Get Your Kicks) on Route 66.” The highway took a maze of different routes, including crossing the greatest of rivers on a bridge with a bend right in the middle. The roadside was lined with flashing neon, classic diners and gas stations where attendants provided speedy service. Also, there were classic amusement parks, drive-in theaters, a man selling frozen custard from a building adorned with wooden icicles, and a motel with a racy but beloved reputation. Joe Sonderman is a St. Louis area radio personality and traffic reporter who has been writing books on Route 66 for 15 years. Since that first work, he has been collecting Route 66 postcards and photographs, some never published before, along with new research on the paths Route 66 took through the area to come up with an entirely new look at Route 66 St. Louis Style .

Bodie, California, Images of America, Paperback

Bodie, California, Images of America, Paperback Nestled amongst the sage-covered, windswept hills of California’s Eastern Sierra is the site of one of the most notorious mining towns of the Old West. In 1859, gold was discovered in the treeless hills northeast of Mono Lake. By 1879, Bodie was a metropolis of nearly 10,000 souls and was briefly the third-largest city in California. Excitement was short-lived, however, and word soon spread that the mines had reached peak production. An exodus began, but contrary to popular belief, Bodie was never totally abandoned. People continued living in this curious and beautiful place throughout the 1950s, and in 1962, the California State Parks system purchased the town site. Now stabilized against the elements, Bodie is today known as the largest unrestored ghost town in the West.

John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York, Images of Aviation, Paperback

John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York, Images of Aviation, Paperback John F. Kennedy International Airport opened in 1948, after the realization set in that the newly built LaGuardia Airport was unable to handle the volume of air traffic for New York City.Pushed through by New York’s Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, the airport was to be located 14 miles from Manhattan, in Jamaica Bay, Queens, on the site of the old Idlewild Golf Course. A major new building program began in the mid-1950s, and the airport rapidly changed from a ramshackle series of buildings into a glamorous-looking city. Renamed John F. Kennedy International Airport in 1963, it has now grown to cover 5,000 acres.

Weatherford, Texas, Images of America, Paperback

Weatherford, Texas, Images of America, Paperback The early years of Weatherford yield stories of trials and triumphs as a rowdy frontier town that matured and became known as the “City of Churches” and the “City Beautiful.” Created in 1856 as the county seat of newly formed Parker County, Weatherford was lush with grasslands, timber, and fertile soils. In 1858, the two-story brick courthouse was surrounded by log cabins, frame buildings, and tents. For nearly two decades, the town was the principal supply center for points west and a safe haven for settlers seeking refuge from Indian raids. Stalwart men and women nurtured the development of religious, educational, and cultural refinements. But when the Texas & Pacific Railway arrived in 1880, it spurred Weatherford’s stature as an agricultural, banking, and commercial center and opened national markets to local cotton and prize-winning watermelons. The historic City Beautiful is still evident today in Weatherford’s picturesque courthouse square and quaint tree-lined residential districts.

Bemiston, Alabama, Images of America, Paperback

Bemiston, Alabama, Images of America, Paperback Built in 1928, the mill town known as Bemiston was a development of the Bemis Brothers Bag Company. This village was built as a model city and boasted all-cement sidewalks and paved streets, which was an unheard-of feature in the late 1920s. The 700,000-square-foot bag plant, which was the center of the community, took almost two years to build due to the lack of electric tools or cranes. Therefore, mules equipped with scoops were given the arduous task of moving the mounds of earth to facilitate construction of this vast plant. Bemiston had its own general store, fire department, and medical office with nurses around the clock. It also had its own electric system, water department, and garbage collection. The community building was the center of social life, and residents spent many hours socializing there. The town was known as a good place to raise children and enjoy family life.

Chicago’s 1893 World’s Fair, Illinois, Images of America, Paperback Step into the future of the past in Chicago’s 1893 World’s Fair! What came to be known as the World’s Columbian Exposition was planned to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s 1492 landfall in the New World. Chicago beat out New York City, St. Louis, Missouri, and Washington, DC, in its bid as host – a coup for the Windy City. The site finally selected for the fair was Jackson Park, a marshy area covered with dense, wild vegetation. Daniel H. Burnham and John W. Root were selected as chief architects, creating the famous White City. The fair featured several different thematic areas: the Great Buildings, Foreign Buildings, State Buildings, and the Midway Plaisance, a nearly mile-long area that featured exotic exhibits. The exposition also showcased the world’s first Ferris Wheel and introduced fairgoers to new sensations like Cracker Jack, Pabst Beer, and ragtime music. Unfortunately, by 1896, most of the fair’s buildings had been removed or destroyed, but this collection takes readers on a tour of the grounds as they looked in 1893.

Florence, Alabama, Images of America, Paperback

Florence, Alabama, Images of America, Paperback Join author and historian Carolyn Barske as she recounts the history of Florence, Alabama through the lens of over 200 vintage images. On the banks of the Tennessee River, below the once-formidable Muscle Shoals in northwest Alabama, sits the vibrant community of Florence. In the early 19th century, the Chickasaw Nation ceded lands to the US government, and in 1818 the Cypress Land Company held its first auction. The town grew quickly because of the efforts of the company’s founders, which included Gen. John Coffee; John McKinley, who later sat on the US Supreme Court; and James Jackson, whose imported Thoroughbred horses became the bloodstock for some of Kentucky’s finest racehorses. Schools, churches, hotels, and businesses soon filled the streets. For almost 200 years, the town of Florence has continued to grow, becoming home to the University of North Alabama and people like the “”Father of the Blues,”” W.C. Handy; Maud Lindsay, who operated the first free kindergarten in the state; and four governors in Edward A. O’Neal, Emmett O’Neal, Robert M. Patton, and Hugh McVay.

Pan Am, Florida, Images of Aviation, Paperback

Pan Am, Florida, Images of Aviation, Paperback Pan American World Airways could be considered a corporate Cinderella–a rags-to-riches-and-back-again phenomenon. From its founding in 1927 and its relatively obscure inauguration as a mail carrier on a 90-mile mail run from Florida’s Key West to Cuba, Pan Am’s route system grew to span the globe. The company that would eventually become famous for its blue-and-white-world logo grew into a conglomerate of hotels, airlines, business jets, real estate, a helicopter service, and even a guided missiles range division. But financial problems plagued Pan Am in its last two decades, and in 1991, Pan American World Airways ceased flying after 64 years of service. The story of Pan Am is as much the story of president Juan T. Trippe as it is an account of airplanes, pilots, flight attendants, and glamorous destinations. As the company moved throughout the world building airfields from jungles, crossing oceans, and forcing the development of new airplanes, it was Trippe’s airline and his vision. A global pioneer, Pan Am was the first airline to use radio communications, to employ cabin attendants and serve meals aloft, and to complete an around-the-world flight. The company’s achievements were legendary, but its failures, tragedies, and disasters were also part of a complex corporate life.

Greater Roland Park, Maryland, Images of America, Paperback

Greater Roland Park, Maryland, Images of America, Paperback Developer Edward Bouton revolutionized American life with the creation of Roland Park, one of the country’s first “streetcar suburbs,” located in Baltimore, Maryland. Unlike many late-19th-century suburbs, Roland Park is well preserved, and many would consider it a late-Victorian version of Colonial Williamsburg. In the 20th century, Bouton also created Roland Park’s sister developments: Guilford, Homeland, and Original Northwood. The latter two were developed after the heyday of the streetcar; in contrast, Roland Park without streetcars would have been unthinkable. Even now, trolley memories abound in the form of surviving old trackage and waiting shelters. Greater Roland Park explores the development of the suburb and its neighbors: Embla Park, Evergreen, Keswick, Lake Falls, Lake Roland, New North Roland Park, The Orchards, Poplar Hill, and Tuxedo Park.

Roaring Camp Railroads, California, Images of Rail, Paperback

Roaring Camp Railroads, California, Images of Rail, Paperback In 1963, Norman Clark officially opened Roaring Camp to the public. Since then, it has become a popular and well-known destination for tourists and rail buffs from around the world who wish to visit and ride on its 100-year-old steam trains. Isaac Graham, who constructed the first powered sawmill and the first whiskey distillery in the American West, settled the area in the 1840s. Graham was notorious for his boisterous antics, and his settlement became known as a “wild and roaring camp.” Clark arrived in the area in the mid-1950s with $25 in his pocket and the dream of preserving a piece of early California. Clark’s dream included a plan to construct an 1880s railroad town, complete with an authentic narrow-gauge logging railway. Over the last 50 years, Clark’s dream has been continued and expanded, now incorporating two railroads, one of which dates to 1875.

Logging Railroads of Humboldt and Mendocino Counties, California, Images of Rail

Logging Railroads of Humboldt and Mendocino Counties, California, Images of Rail Locomotive steam whistles echo no more in the forests of the north California coast. A century ago, Humboldt and Mendocino Counties had more than 40 railroads bringing logs out of the forest to mills at the water’s edge. Only one single railroad ever connected to the outside world, and it too is gone. One railroad survives as the Skunk Train in Mendocino County, and it carries tourists today instead of lumber. Redwood and tan oak bark were the two products moved by rail, and very little else was hauled other than lumberjacks and an occasional picnic excursion for loggers’ families. Economic depressions and the advent of trucking saw railroads vanish like a puff of steam from the landscape.

Railroads of Nevada County, California, Images of Rail, Paperback

Railroads of Nevada County, California, Images of Rail, Paperback The Central Pacific Railroad was the first railroad to enter Nevada County as it constructed eastward in 1865. At the base of the eastern slope of Donner Pass, the railroad established a construction camp, now known as Truckee, before following the Truckee River to the Nevada state line. Truckee became home to expansive locomotive facilities for helper locomotives on trains westbound over Donner Pass after the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. Through the end of the 19th century, additional railroads were constructed, bringing the outside world closer to the remote corners of the county. Railroads like the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad and Nevada County Traction Company served the gold rush-era boomtowns of Grass Valley and Nevada City. Lumber companies like the Towle Brothers and the Sierra Nevada Wood & Lumber Company brought rail into the forests and filled the demand for lumber throughout the region.

Port Orford and North Curry County, Oregon, Images of America, Paperback

Port Orford and North Curry County, Oregon, Images of America, Paperback Perched on the cliffs above the Pacific Ocean, Port Orford claims to be the oldest town site on the Oregon coast and the farthest west incorporated community in the continental United States. Incomparable scenery surrounds it, providing work for generations of residents: lumber from trees of the great forests and all manner of seafood harvested from ocean waters. Gold lay in the waters and banks of streams and in the black sands of beaches, attracting the earliest settlers in 1851. Farming came later but proved successful, especially for cattle and sheep farmers and cranberry growers. Residents have survived fire, earthquake, severe storms, and the fluctuations of the mining, timber, and fishing industries. As Oregon developed, county lines changed. The south coast area was part of Jackson County in 1852, then Coos County in 1853. Curry County was formed in 1855, and Port Orford was the first county seat until Oregon statehood in 1859.

Naptown Rock Radio Wars, Indiana, Images of America, Paperback It was a fight to the death . . . well, maybe not to the death, but it was definitely a battle that would change not only the listening habits of tens of thousands of Hoosiers but also the entire culture of the Indiana state capital city.It had repercussions throughout the nation as the first major war of AM radio versus FM radio. It was Forty-fives versus album cuts and the “good guys” versus the “bad boys”–and Naptown would never be the same. Two brilliant and fierce broadcasting competitors went head to head: Richard Fairbanks, who for almost two decades owned WIBC-AM 1070, the 50,000-watt radio behemoth, versus Don Burden, the young upstart broadcasting impresario who swaggered into town and launched the glitzy, promotion-oriented though relatively low-powered WIFE-AM 1310. How was the war fought? What were the strategies? Who were the personalities both in the limelight and behind the scenes? And who, in the end, would win Naptown’s rock radio wars?

Wenatchee, Washington, Images of America, Paperback

Wenatchee, Washington, Images of America, Paperback Wenatchee, named after the native people who inhabited the valley in the eastern Cascades for centuries, is situated at the confluence of the Wenatchee and Columbia Rivers in central Washington. The first European explorers came through Wenatchee in 1811. Settlement began in 1868 and increased with the coming of the Great Northern Railway Company in 1892. Its population grew rapidly as merits of the area’s soil, climate, and water resources attracted homesteaders who planted orchards. The tree fruit industry thrived, and Wenatchee became known as the “Apple Capital of the World,” with an annual Apple Blossom Festival that endures as the community’s biggest celebration. Orchards propelled the economy through most of the 20th century. Now, thanks to Wenatchee’s location on two rivers in the Cascade foothills, the town has become a destination for outdoor recreation and wine tourism with a beautiful downtown historic district worth exploring.

Cheney, Washington, Images of America, Paperback

Cheney, Washington, Images of America, Paperback Established as a railroad section station on the Northern Pacific Railroad, Cheney boomed into existence as the Spokane County seat in 1880. The most enduring legacy of the pioneers was Eastern Washington University, beginning as the Benjamin P. Cheney Academy in 1882 with a donation from the town’s namesake. In 1891, it became Washington’s first normal school for the training of teachers. Growing and diversifying, the university now has a student body of over 10,000.

Camas Prairie Railroad, Idaho, Images of Rail, Paperback

Camas Prairie Railroad, Idaho, Images of Rail, Paperback Incorporated in 1909, the Camas Prairie Railroad (CPRR) was a successful joint venture between two major competing companies, the Union Pacific and Northern Pacific Railroads.Despite covering less than 300 miles total, the Camas Prairie Railroad connected the region’s largest exporters of wheat and lumber and was the last vital section of rail to directly connect the eastern United States with the Pacific Northwest. In addition to freight, the CPRR was the most reliable method of transportation for people and the postal service in this rural area, even allowing for the creation of new towns along the line. The Camas Prairie itself ranged from desert to mountainous forests, with rugged river canyons in between. Infamously known as the “Railroad on Stilts,” one subdivision alone boasts 44 bridges, many of them made from heavy timber. No longer in business, portions of the track have been removed while some remain active, carrying freight to larger markets. Trestles and tunnels still dot the landscape, giving a peek into the not-so-distant past.Special collections librarian Robert Perret and archives manager Amy Thompson work in the Special Collections and Archives at the University of Idaho, where they are immersed in the history of the Inland Northwest.

Arizona’s Historic Trading Posts, Arizona, Images of America, Paperback

Arizona’s Historic Trading Posts, Arizona, Images of America, Paperback On the sparsely settled Arizona reservation lands, trading posts were important centers for commerce as well as social gathering destinations. With a subsistence economy, the posts offered opportunities to trade sheep, wool, and crafts for necessities such as flour, coffee, sugar (known as “sweet-salt”), and tools. Most often, traders were Anglos, living as partners among their Indian neighbors. They often were the only contact with the outside culture, and their stores provided an outlet for local arts such as rugs, pottery, baskets, and jewelry. Traders helped with correspondence, transportation, and sickness, and they even buried the dead. Trading posts were the sites of marriages and murders; they were destinations for artists, scientists, and adventurous tourists. With the coming of roads and automobiles, trading posts have all but disappeared, but the stories and photographs shared in this volume offer a glimpse into a vanishing time in the Southwest.

Central of Georgia Railway, Georgia, Images of America, Paperback

Central of Georgia Railway, Georgia, Images of America, Paperback Organized in 1833 by Savannah businessmen, the Central of Georgia Railway was chartered by the Georgia Legislature as the Central Rail Road & Canal Company. The line, connecting Savannah to the interior of the state, boosted the coastal city’s seaport, which had lost business to Charleston because of the South Carolina Rail Road’s inland reach. In 1843, the Central was extended from Savannah to the outskirts of Macon, and after nearly 120 years of successful operation, the Central of Georgia Railway was purchased by Southern Railway. By 1982, it became merely an accounting entry in the books of Norfolk Southern, a major transportation company.

Cincinnati’s Underground Railroad, Ohio, Images of America, Paperback

Cincinnati’s Underground Railroad, Ohio, Images of America, Paperback Cincinnati played a large part in creatng a refuge for escaped salaves and in the Underground Railroad movement.Nearly a century after the American Revolution, the waters of the Ohio River provided a real and complex barrier for the United States to navigate. While this waterway was a symbol of freedom and equality for thousands of enslaved black Americans who had escaped from the horrible institution of enslavement, the Ohio River was also used to transport thousands of slaves down the river to the Deep South. Due to Cincinnati’s location on the banks of the river, the city’s economy was tied to the slave society in the South. However, a special cadre of individuals became very active in the quest for freedom undertaken by African American fugitives on their journeys to the North. Thanks to spearheading by this group of Cincinnatian trailblazers, the “”Queen City”” became a primary destination on the Underground Railroad, the first multiethnic, multiracial, multiclass human-rights movement in the history of the United States.

Saginaw, Michigan, Images of America, Paperback

Saginaw, Michigan, Images of America, Paperback Saginaw’s history begins with its river system; the first inhabitants of the area were the Chippewa Indians who used the Saginaw, Shiawassee, and Tittabawassee Rivers for transportation, fishing, and rice harvesting. In 1675, Jesuit priest Fr. Henri Nouvel arrived by canoe from St. Ignace in the Upper Peninsula to minister to the local tribes. As the first European visitor, he arrived before the rivers brought the fur traders, who established trading posts to barter with the Native Americans. In 1819, territorial governor Lewis Cass negotiated a treaty with the Native Americans in which millions of acres of their land was ceded to the U.S. government. After the treaty, settlers began to arrive, and lumber barons from the East found that the rivers could transport logs from the woods to the sawmills that dotted the Saginaw River. After the lumber industry waned, many varied trades came into being, and a long list of famous names are connected to the growth of the city. A small selection of early developers, heroes, and modern-day entrepreneurs are featured in this book.

St. Ignace, Michigan, Images of America, Paperback

St. Ignace, Michigan, Images of America, Paperback Even before it was named in 1671, St. Ignace was a key part of Michigan history. Before Fr. Jacques Marquette and the Jesuits arrived in the Straits of Mackinac, St. Ignace had a large Native American settlement. With the arrival of the French, fur trading became an important industry. St. Ignace became the county seat in 1882. By the mid-1800s, fishing, shipping, manufacturing, and lumbering were a crucial part of St. Ignace activity. As these industries died down, tourism increased. The area was appealing to tourists for its natural beauty and its fresh air; many came for relief from hay fever and asthma. Initially travelers arrived by ship and train. Ferryboats were important in transporting visitors and goods because of the primitive road system. With its natural harbor, St. Ignace was within easy reach of other Great Lakes ports. With the completion of the Mackinac Bridge in 1957, travel to St. Ignace became much easier. St. Ignace is often referred to as the “Gateway to the Upper Peninsula.”
